Kannudi ( ಕಂನುಡಿ ) is a reference editor for Kannada based on OPOK! and OHOK! principles, and domain knowledge. It is an online editor, as such, there is no need to download or install any software.

It introduces a method of input for Kannada, called OHOK!, that is, Ottu Hāku Ottu Koḍu! (apply pressure and give ottu). This is especially suited for pressure sensitive input devices, though the current online implementation uses the regular mechanical keyboard in which case it can be called Ottu Hiḍi Ottu Koḍu! (hold pressed and give ottu). OHOK! has three possible modes, namely, sva-ottu (self,conjunct), kandante (as you see), and andante (as you say). It may be noted that kandante mode does not follow the phonetic order. However, this mode may work well for those who are inclined to visualize as they type rather than vocalizing the sounds.

Kannudi also demonstrates how domain knowledge can be effectively used to potentially increase speed, accuracy, and user friendliness. For example, selection of a default vowel, automatic shunyification, and arkification. Also implemented are four types Deletes that are necessary for phono-syllabic languages like Kannada.

To switch between Kannada and Latin scripts,

1. use the radio buttons

Typing Kannada Letters

To produce Kannada letters, corresponding Latin letters are pressed as shown in the keyboard layout. Depending on the chosen Default Vowel actual keys pressed may differ as explained below.

Default Vowel

Kannada letters, as written in the alphabet or as shown in the keyboard layout above, inherently contain the vowel ಅ a. This can be changed to null-vowel (ನಿಸ್ವರ) ್. Two switch between the two vowels as default use the radio buttons:

OHOK! Modes

OHOK! stands for ಒತ್ತು ಹಾಕು ಒತ್ತು ಕೊಡು (put pressure and give ottu) or in case of mechanical keyboard ಒತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿ ಒತ್ತು ಕೊಡು (hold pressed and give ottu). Here a key is pressed hard or held pressed to create an ottakshara (conjunctHere OHOK! of a key, namely applying pressure (or holding pressed) is denoted by superscript ⁺ sign. OHOK! has three modes:

1. Sva-ottu Mode (SO): This is Self-Ottu, also known as Dvitva where a consonant gets its ownottu. For example, k⁺ will produce ಕ್ಕ. And kn⁺w, equivalent to typing knfnw, produces ಕನ್ನಡ.

2. Kaṇḍante Ottu Mode (KO): This is visual mode where the input follows the written order – holding a consonant will add its ottu to preceding consonant. For example, the key sequencest⁺r⁺I (= sftfrI) produces ಸ್ತ್ರೀ.

3. Andante Ottu Mode (AO): This is “as you say” or phonetic mode Pressing and holding (ಒತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿ) of a consonant key will prepare it for an ottu by adding the null vowel (virama). To produce ಸ್ತ್ರೀ enter s⁺t⁺rI. In essence this is an alternative to f key in normal mode.

Saving the text

1. Dropdown menu item ಕಡತ->ಉಳಿಸು (File->Save) will download the text to a file named kannudi.html without prompts.Note: An existing by the same name will be overwritten.

2. Select all (ctrl-A) and copy (ctrl-C) the text. The it can be pasted (ctrl-V) into suitable application (like MS-Word, notepad, …) and can be further edited and saved

Opening a Document

An existing document can be opened for editing using the dropdown File menu item ಕಡತ->ತೆರೆ (File->Open)

Backspace ←BS

Back space key ←BS is used erase text to the left of the cursor as follows:

1. ←BS: Phoneme Delete - delete the phoneme

2. alt←BS: Character Delete - delete the (unicode) character

3. shift←BS: Syllable Delete - delete the syllable

4. ctrl←BS: Word Delete - delete the word
