ಅವಿರತ ಅಪೂರ್ವ ಸಂಗತಿ
ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅವಿರತ ಅಪೂರ್ವ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಸುಮಾರು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಕೈಬೆರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಣಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಯ್ತು. ಕೂಡಲೆ , ೮೦ಕ್ಕೂ ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಯ ಐದು ಅಧ್ಯಾಯಗಳು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕ್ಯಾಲಿಫೋರ್ನಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಡಿಕೊಂಡವು. ಈಗ ನಾವು ೨೨೦+ ಸದೃಢರಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಕಳೆದ ವರ್ಷವೆ ಹೊಸ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿ ಶಾಲೆಯೊಂದು ಟಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಯ್ತು. ಈಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ೨೫ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ತಾಯ್ನುಡಿಯ ಕಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರತರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಪೂರಣದ ಹರ್ಷ ಸಂದರ್ಭದ ನಿಮಿತ್ತ , ಉಷಾ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಅವರ ನೇತೃತ್ವದ, ಟಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ವೃಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾರ್ದಿಕ ಅಭಿನಂದನೆಗಳು. ಅಮೇರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಜಾಗತಿಕವಾಗಿಯೂ ನಾವು ಕನ್ನಡ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ-ಸಹಾಯ ನೀಡುತ್ತ ಇದ್ದೇವೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿ ಈಗ ಒಂದು ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಪದವಾಗಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ!
ನುಡಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಒಂದನ್ನೊಂದು ಬಿಡಿಸಲಾಗದಂತೆ ಹೊಸೆದುಕೊಂಡಿವೆ. ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ನಿರಂತರ ಉಗ್ರ ದಾಳಿಗಳಿಂದ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಉಳಿದದ್ದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಿಂದ. ಅಂತೆಯೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊರನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು, ಮತ್ತು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ, ಬಾಹ್ಯ ಮೋಹಗಳಿಂದ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತರಾಗುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಸ್ವಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಒಂದೆ ನಮಗಿರುವ ಅವಶ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಲಭ ಸಾಧನ. ನಾವು ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು, ಗೋಡೆಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪಠ್ಯಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಪಾಠಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾಷಾ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಉತ್ತಮ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂದೂ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಒಂದುಗೂಡಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಕಲಿಸದೆಯೆ ನಡೆದುಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂಥ ಪರಿಸರ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವು - ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು, ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು, ಮತ್ತು ತಂದೆತಾಯಿಯರು - ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಯನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವ ಮೂರು ಕಂಬಗಳು.
ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಿಗೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬರುವುದಲ್ಲದೆ, ತಂದೆತಾಯಿಯರು ಏನೇನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರೋ - ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಾತಾಡುವುದು, ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ದಿನಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಕತೆ ಓದುವುದು, ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಟಿ.ವಿ. ನೋಡುವುದು, ಕನ್ನಡ ಹಾಡು ಕೇಳುವುದು, ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುವುದು, ಇತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೊರಗಣ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವುದು - ಅವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಬೇಕು. ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲೂ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರಬೇಕು.
ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಇರುವುದೋ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳೆದ ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಗಳಿಸಿದ ಗೆಳೆತನಕ್ಕೂ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅನನ್ಯತೆಗೂ ಹೋಲಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ.

Kannada Kali is a continuing phenomenon. When we started almost 20 years ago, we had a handful of students. Quickly we grew to 80 plus students and five Kannada Kali chapters throughout Southern California. We are now 160+ strong and still growing. Just last year a new school started in Torrance where 25 students are busy learning our mother tongue. Hearty congratulations to the Torrance team, led by Usha and Prashanth Bangalore, on the anniversary of Torrance school. We are inspiring and helping Kannada efforts across America and globally. Kannada Kali has become an everyday word!
Language and culture are inseparably intertwined. Indian culture survived under centuries of constant fierce attacks because of Sanskrit and other Indian languages. Similarly, only Kannada is our necessary and simple means in our duty to retain our culture, and importantly, to impart the cultural values and shape the identities of our children who are surrounded by external influences. What we really do is not in the textbook lessons and language exercises we conduct within the four walls. Good values never rise in isolation. It is the environment we create by coming together where learning takes place without being taught. In creating such an environment, you, the students, teachers, and parents are the three pillars of Kannada Kali.
In addition to bringing the children to Kannada Kali, parents need to continue to do what they are doing, be it, speaking Kannada at home, reading a Kannada story every day to your child, watching Kannada movies and TV programs, listening to Kannada songs, encouraging the child to speak and write a letter to grandma in Kannada, or participating in outdoor and cultural activities with other Kannada families. Where there is Kannada, any time you spend there is incomparable to many friends gained, culture and identity retained.
